I thought, just to get the virtual machine working, I would put an install of sun virtual box on one of our servers and load it into that. I did that, the load worked fine, but when it boots it gets kernel panic - cannot sync.
So the problem is this - this virtual machine image does not work with a vanilla installation of Virtual Box, either the virtual machine defaults in Virtual Box, or the actual vm appliance settings are wrong. Either way, the virtual image was not set to to have APIC enabled. After ticking this box to enable that, the box booted first time.
